First Watch
As purposeless as lamplight
Illuming blind man’s home,
We finished our assignment:
Guarding a corpse's tomb.
What object had we?
What were we about--
Keeping a dead man in
Or keeping live ones out?
Third Watch
As powerless as the sand
To stop the sea’s abuse,
We trembled while an earthquake
Rolled the tombstone loose.
We saw a man in white,
A flaming messenger,
And shaken by the sight,
Fainted dead away in fear.
(Suggested by Richard Wilbur’s “Two Voices in a Meadow”)
